In search of the Inchfad canal

After filling my recently purchased Aldi drybag (extra large) with everything we needed to have Sunday dinner on Inchfad, myself and the bold Berny set off from a fairly busy Milarochy Bay.

Such a popular location on a sunny summer’s evening. Don’t be fooled into thinking that even at 7 o’clock on a Sunday evening you’ll easily find a parking space. The carpark was mobbed! (note: since this visit I believe that paid parking, that is very heavily policed, has been introduced).

So, after setting up the boards we hit the water and it was glorious. Hardly any clouds, still a few hours left in the sun, is there a better way of spending a Sunday evening?

We didn’t realise there was a canal on Inchfad and as my previous canal experience has been limited to Auchistarry, Bowling and Blairdardie, I was kind of expecting something a bit more canal-like than what we found.

Turns out, it’s just a man-made channel that leads to where there used to be a distillery. Wasn’t sure how suitable it was for paddling right into and if anyone was living on there it would have all felt a bit too “Deliverance” so we didn’t venture too far up it before returning and carrying on around the island.

We carried on with our paddle around the furthest westerly point of Inchfad and then just off it, we found the perfect spot to get the camping stove out and cook up our dinner. So peaceful out there and hardly any motorised vehicles.

After stuffing ourselves and exploring the wee island a bit more (noting that it looks like a great spot for an overnight visit as long as there is a breeze), we tidied up and headed off for what was a fairly decent schlep heading in as straight a line as possible back to Milarochy Bay. Took a wee while!

Got back just in time to watch a lovely sunset. I love Milarochy. It’s a great setting off point for so many great wee adventures. It’s murder if there is no breeze though, so make sure you are nice and quick at getting your board deflated and packed away in the car!
