I don’t use Facebook much but since I found some really good local SUP groups on there, I’m using it a lot more. Such a positive group of people – helpful, friendly and don’t take themselves too seriously. I had a bit of yearning to get a Friday night paddle in with my daughter and thought I’d ask the Glasgow Paddleboarders Facebook group about where I could go that would be Bam-free and within 30 minutes of Glasgow.
Plumped for Aldlochlay, just South of Luss as a wee paddle round an island seemed like a great idea. There isn’t much parking there so we drove along a bit to the carpark next to the filling station and village shop, just by the lochside at Luss. I was a bit more worried about the bam element there but as it was 7pm on a fairly grey night (the sun did end up coming out eventually) it wasn’t busy at all.
Lots of space to get the boards pumped up, easy parking and very easy access to the water. I’d imagine it’d be pure murder during the weekend though.
We headed South from there, past the pier and towards a wee island I can’t find the name of anywhere. We went for a look about on there but spotted quite a few nesting seagulls (some nests even had eggs in them) so we decided to vacate the island as quick as wee could in case we started getting dive-bombed.
We could see that the rainclouds were on their way in so we were only out for 45 minutes but it was a great way to spend a Friday evening. I think I’ll come back up and set off from Aldlochlay, maybe even do very early morning stint before work one day.
