Back in January, in the deepest darkest days of the third Lockdown I got on the computer to look for somewhere we could book for a holiday at the end of June, guessing/hoping/praying that by then, staycations would be “allowed”.

Been to Dumfries and Galloway a few times and I think it’s habitually overlooked by most central belters who tend to look North rather than South when on the hunt for holiday or camping opportunities. Lovely part of the world that Costa del Solway.

We booked into a lovely wee apartment right on Garlieston harbour, just 50m from a slipway and 150m from a shingle beach. Sounds perfect but let’s just say that when the tide goes out in the firth of Solway, it REALLY goes out. Still plenty of opportunities to get out onto the water though, you just need to time it well or you’ll get really muddy, smelly feet.

So, quite a lot of paddleboarding fun to be had from right outside your front door. You can paddle over to Eggerness Point, muck about in Garlieston Bay or my favourite, drive round to Rigg Bay (park in the amazing Galloway House Gardens carpark, walk the half kilometre trail to the beach and paddle back to Garlieston. That one was particularly glorious. REALLY wish I’d got my Garmin watch and Go-Pro knock off working better!
